BREEDING BEEF: (Beef breeds only)

OWNERSHIP DEADLINE:

January 15, 2009

Breeding Beef Show Registration Deadline:

Entries are to be postmarked by January 15, 2009.  They are to be mailed to the Beef Coordinator.

Proof of ownership must accompany the entry form.  If the exhibitor LEASES the animal:  Have a signed lease agreement.

CLASS  DETERMINATION:

If a sufficient number of heifers are entered, the Project Coordinator and Superintendent may

separate classes by birth date.

HEALTH REQUIREMENTS:

Health requirements will be dictated by the State Livestock Board. The exhibitor must provide proof of ownership as per the Arizona State Livestock Board requirements.  Ownership and registration papers must be in the exhibitor's name or proof of possession of same documents at the time of ear-tagging, tattooing, or registration.

SPECIAL GROOMING RULE:  HEADS AND TAILS MUST BE CLIPPED PRIOR TO ARRIVAL AT THE FAIRGROUNDS.  IF NOT, THEY WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR EXHIBITION.  No horns over one inch long on market steers.  Breeding heifers is allowed horns if they are breed specific on registered breeds only.  While in public area horned heifers must have protection covering the tips of the horns.  All clipping must be done in a designated area, and final blocking must be done by a current year Pima County 4-H/FFA member.  Approval may be obtained from the Beef Project Coordinator and Beef Superintendent for a current year Pima County 4-H/FFA leader to assist Senior Novice or Junior Novice members with final touch up fitting.  Animal’s exhibitor must be in attendance and assisting with final touch up fitting.

MARKET STEERS:

Min. wt. at tagging:             600 lbs. (Suggested)

Max. wt. at tagging:             1000 lbs.(Suggested)          

Max. Age-Ear-tagging:  All steers must have both

temporary central incisors (BABY TEETH) in

place at time of tagging

PREVIOUS SHOWS:

Steers will not be tagged that have been shown as

market steers at any County, State, or National Show.

Max. number/exhibitor:  two (2) + carcass steers

Minimum weight at Fair:  950 lbs.

Maximum weight at Fair:  No maximum,

although exhibitor will be paid for a maximum

sale weight of  1200 lbs.

A.    All exhibitors must be present to take their steers & heifers across the scale for weigh-in at Fair.  Any exceptions must be discussed with the Coordinator prior to weigh-in otherwise the steer or heifer will not be allowed across the scale.

B.   Any steer that leaves the Fairgrounds is not 

eligible to return to be placed on the packer’s   trucks provided by the Pima County Jr. Livestock Sales Committee. 

C.   Project Coordinator reserves the right to make

any changes or split any class or classes deemed          necessary.

D.    Weight classes will be determined by breaking

the Market Steer classes and Feeder Beef classes into approximately equal numbers as deemed appropriate by the Project Coordinator.

E.     Market steer and Pen of Three classes will be 

posted by 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 22, 2009.

F.    Exhibitors with steers eligible for the

 Arizona Bred, Born and Fed class must notify

  Project Coordinator of intent to exhibit in the

 "Best Arizona" class at time of ear-tagging.   The

 exhibitor must provide proof of ownership as per   

 the Arizona State Livestock Board requirements. 

 Ownership and registration papers must be in the 

 exhibitor's name or proof of possession of same

 documents at the time of ear-tagging, tattooing, 

 or registration.

G.   Steers may not be tied in livestock barn or

ramada prior to weigh-in at Pima County Fair.

H.    There will be a $10.00 project support fee per

exhibitor, payable at ear-tagging for market and    breeding exhibitors payable at fair for feeder exhibitors.

I.      All exhibitors must have a barrier at least 20”

       in height behind their steers. This may be of   

       rope, chain or straw bales on end.

J.    All beef animals must be double tied, with a

halter and neck rope at all times, both in the barn and outside.

K.    No horseplay or rough housing will be allowed

in the barn. Individuals doing this will be asked to leave the barn area.

FEEDER BEEF: (No Dairy breeds allowed)

OWNERSHIP DEADLINE:

January 15, 2009 ‑ must be recorded with Project Coordinator.

FEEDER BEEF SHOW REGISTRATION

DEADLINE:

Entries must be postmarked by January 15, 2009.  They are to be mailed to the Beef Coordinator.  Proof of ownership must accompany the entry form.

A.  Maximum Weight:  949 LBS.

B.  Classes will be determined by the Project

      Coordinator.

C.  Steers tagged for market in November may not

      be entered in feeder class.

CARCASS BEEF:

A.   Ownership Deadline: Saturday, November 8,

       2008.

B.   Animals will be ear-tagged at the same time as

the market beef.  You may tag 2 market steers.  One of those steers may also be double tagged as a carcass steer.  The decision to enter the steer into either the market or carcass class must be made by carcass beef weigh in.  You will decide to have either two market steers and one carcass steer or 2 carcass steers and one market steer by carcass weigh-in.  Heifers may also be tagged as a carcass animal. 

C.    A finished live weight of 1000 to 1350

pounds is recommended in order for the meat

carcass to meet suggested hot carcass weight of 600-900 pounds.

D.   A $50.00 entry fee will be required of each entry

       at the time of registration to be used as premium

money.

E.    Carcass beef weigh-in will be Sunday,

April 19, 2009 from 4:00 – 5 p.m.  Immediately after the weigh-in the 4-H/FFA beef carcass members must remain to judge the carcass beef live. This is open to all beef members.  It is strongly recommended that beef carcass steers be halter broke but it is not mandatory.

F.    Carcass beef will be judged on the rail.

After carcass judging, reasons for placing and evaluation will be given on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, 9:00 am 

G.    All meat carcass animals will be processed

at the same facility for home use only - there will be no sales of these animals through the Livestock Auction or by consignment to packers.  All processing fees will be paid by the exhibitor.

H.    Premium monies will be divided on the 

         following basis: 

                0-$1600.00

 Grand Champion Carcass:         60%

 Reserve Champion Carcass:      40%

        $1601-$2000.00

Grand Champion Carcass:          50%

Reserve Champion Carcass:       35%

3rd Place Carcass:                         15%

        2001- and up                        

Grand Champion Carcass:          40%

Reserve Champion Carcass:       30%

3rd Place Carcass:                         20%

4th Place Carcass:                          10%

 

I.      All entry fees, fund-raisers and donation (if any) 

        will be collected by the Project Coordinator  and 

        forwarded to the Pima County 4-H Leaders

        Association to disperse to the contestants.  10% 

        of the money collected will be held for the

        following year’s Carcass Fund.

J.     The Steer of Merit will be judged by Grid

        Pricing.  Grid Pricing for dressed cattle is a  

        combination of quality and yield grade.  90% of  

        cattle are sold on a grid.  We will use current

        market pricing based on USDA Market News 

        Service at www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports which

        will be printed out that day.  The tie-breaker will

        be the HCW after all calculations are done on the

        grid.  An example of Grid Pricing is attached at

        the back of this Premium Book.

       February 28, 2006

To show a heifer at the 2009 Pima County Fair, the heifer must qualify for one of the above classes.

4  Championship ‑ Grand and Reserve Champion Market Steers.

5  Average Daily Gain Award ‑ Calculated on all steers and to be given to the steer having the highest average daily gain from date of ear-tagging to weigh‑in at the Fair. This information will be made available to the judge upon request.  The results will be posted.

CLASS 5: BEST ARIZONA BRED,

BORN AND FED

If the Grand and/or Reserve Champion Steers are not an Arizona Bred, Born and Fed steer there will be a class.  The top two steers from each class must be available to enter the show ring after the Grand and Reserve Champion Class.

CLASS 6:  BEST 4-H/FFA PEN OF THREE

   MARKET STEERS

Three (3) animals, not necessarily of the same breed, from one (1) 4-H club or FFA.  Quality and uniformity to be considered.  If necessary a pegger may be a member of another club with the Project Coordinator’s approval.  Pen of 3 entries are due to the Project Coordinator by noon, Wednesday, April 22, 2009.

 

There will be a 45 minute lunch break between the conclusion of the Pen of three class and the beginning of the Showmanship Class.
