OWNERSHIP DEADLINE:

The exhibitor must have a seasonal pass from the AZ Dept. of Ag and provide proof of ownership as per the Arizona State Livestock Board requirements. Ownership and registration papers must be in the exhibitor's name or proof of possession of same documents at the time of ear-tagging, tattooing, or registration.

A $10.00 project fee benefiting the Sheep Project will be charged at the time of ear tagging. Lambs must be ear tagged and tattooed, have hauling papers at the ear tagging and at fair check-in . No rams will be ear tagged. Testicles must be removed from the animal. Each animal must have it’s own hauling paper. AZ Bred & Fed form will be considered proof of ownership if this applies to the animal. Three (3) market lambs may be ear tagged at this time per exhibitor, but only two (2) market lambs may be exhibited at the fair. See General Livestock rules.

TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR PROJECT. PLEASE CLEAN UP THE BLEACHER AREA AFTER YOUR SHOWS.

Minimum weight at Fair:

All Market Lambs to weigh 100 lbs. minimum

Maximum pay weight at Fair:

All Market Lambs to maximum pay weight of 135 lbs.  

SPECIAL RULES:

A. Second part helpers will be allowed only upon discretion of the Project Coordinator.

 Second part helper must be a currently enrolled Pima County 4-H/FFA member.

B. Classes will be divided by Project Coordinator and Superintendent.

C. Non-sale lambs will be released Friday, April 24, 2009 from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. and 5:00  to 6:00 p.m. ONLY.

D. All market lambs must be slick shorn at Fair weigh-in.

E. The Market Lamb Show is open to wether or  ewe kids that have all milk teeth and no  evidence of eruption of either of two (2)  permanent front teeth.

F. At the time of arrival at the livestock barn,  there will be a health check conducted by  three (3) certified lamb leaders. These leaders  will be designated by the Lamb Project  Coordinator and/or Superintendent.  At this time of arrival at the livestock barn,  there will be a health check conducted by  three (3) certified Lamb leaders. This  inspection will be conducted before the  animal is placed on the scale. Once the  animal has been cleared and weighed, it is  considered acceptable for participation.

 

ARIZONA BRED AND FED CLASS:

 Arizona Bred and Fed are lambs bred, conceived, born, raised and fed on Arizona soil.

1.     Exhibitors with lambs eligible for the  Arizona Bred and Fed class must complete  a form at ear-tagging notifying the Project Coordinator of intent to exhibit in the "Best Arizona" class. Forms will be available from the Project Coordinator, Superintendent, and the Extension Office.

2.         Exhibitors in Arizona Bred and Fed class must have a Livestock Inspection  Certificate showing place of birth as Arizona to qualify and must provide a form with the breeders name, phone and signature.

3.         Lambs in Arizona Bred and Fed competition will have different, easily identifiable ear-tags.

4.        Callbacks for Arizona Bred and Fed Champion Market Lamb will be the top two (2) Arizona Bred and Fed lambs per market class as long as they are not white ribbon animals.

CARCASS LAMB WEIGH-IN:

Sunday, February 22, 2009. 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Must weigh-in with the Jackpot show lambs.

CARCASS LAMB SHOW:

Saturday February 21, 2009.

The objective of this contest is to promote the raising of sheep that will economically yield superior carcasses and to promote education regarding carcass merit. Carcasses will be evaluated and placed on the basis of quality and cut ability.

A. All animals entered in this contest must have a current and valid livestock hauling paper which will be inspected at ear-tagging and again at weigh-in prior to carcass and market show.

B. A $20.00 entry fee will be required at time of  Registration to be used as premium money. Checks should be made payable to Pima County  Leaders Association.

C. There must be a minimum of three (3) carcass  Exhibitors to hold a contest. An exhibitor may  enter two carcass lambs per year.

D. Carcass exhibitors must be affiliated with either a 4-H club or an FFA lamb club. Any 4-H club or FFA school may sponsor a carcass animal but Either a current 4-H/FFA member must care for it.

E.       Carcass lamb weigh in will be at the U of A Meat Lab on February 22, 2009, FROM 2-4 PM, during the Jackpot show weigh-in. They will be judged in a live carcass class during the show.

F.       All contest participants must attend the viewing of the carcass lambs on March 28, 2009, 4:30 pm at the Arizona Meat Lab.

G.       Lamb carcass animals will be processed for home use only. The exhibitor will pay processing fees. No sales of this class will be through the Auction.

H.      Premium money will not exceed $1,400.00 and will be allocated for the lamb carcass show as follows: $1,250.00 for the top four carcasses of the show and $150.00 for the top two AZ Bred and Fed carcass lambs.

Lamb of Merit Carcass Requirements:

Areas of consideration will be the hot carcass weight, last rib fat thickness, loin area, yield grade a and quality grade.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Live lamb weight : Min. 90 Lbs. Max. 140 Lbs.

Hot carcass weight: Min. 45 lbs. Max. 80 lbs.

Carcass grade minimum: Choice 50

Yield grade minimum: Not to exceed 2.5

Yield grade:= (10) (Adjusted 12th rib fat thickness) + .4

Leg score= (3) Heavy muscled, (2) Medium muscled.

Minimum rib eye area (loin area) 2.5 square inches

All lambs in the carcass show must have break joints at the rail show. Break joints are found in lambs 12 months of age and younger. If the carcass does not possess break joints then the lamb is too old for the show and will be disqualified. The ideal age for the carcass show is six (6) months.

TEAM GROOMING CONTEST:

1.           Entry Deadline: No later than 2009 Large Stock Work Night. Tentatively, March 24, 2009. Teams will be determined by lottery after sign-ups have been completed.

2.           Teams will be judged on speed, working with teammates, skill in showmanship and knowledge.

3.           This team will consist of three members in the Lamb/Market Goat project.

4.           This will be a timed event. Washing 30 minutes. Sheep shearing and grooming, 60 minutes, Showmanship, at the judges discretion.

5.           Each team will provide their own equipment. They will not be able to leave the show area after the timed portion of the event has begun.

6.           All team members must be equally involved in the washing, shearing and showing of the animal. The emphasis will be on teamwork.

7.           The team may use any grooming aids they feel will improve the look of the animal that are within the guidelines of the Code of Ethics and 4-H/FFA showmanship attire.

8.           When time is called on the shearing and grooming portion of the event, the animal will be moved to the show ring. At this time, all participants must be in 4-H /FFA showmanship attire.

9.           Showman will be the final stage for judging in showmanship and knowledge.

Event Guidelines:

1.         Sheep used in the event will be provided by an outside source.

2.         The team may proceed to the next stage of the contest if they finish before the allotted time.

3.        The animal for each team will be selected by a random drawing.

4.        Animals may not be handled by any of the teams prior to the contest.

5.        There will be NO help from leaders or other club members. This includes going after supplies or materials or verbal comments.

6.        Only fine surgical blades will be used to shear sheep.

7.           Surgical tape will be placed on ewe teats to prevent injury.

Disqualification from competition:

1.           Outside help of any kind.

2.           Major cuts or lacerations in shearing.

3.           Fighting among team members.

4.           Any member of the team leaving the show area during the contest.

5.           Taunting, negative gestures or comments made by team members toward another team.

6.           The Director/Superintendent and Sheep leaders of the team in question, along with another sheep leader will determine any disqualifications.

AWARDS

                 Grand Champion - All team members will receive plaques.

 Res. Champion - All team members will receive plaques.

 Members of all other teams will receive ribbons.
